Welcome to the Pélago Valley blog. I’m so excited you are here and can’t wait to inspire you to rediscover the joy of cooking a meal for your family.

What you’ll find here in the Pélago Valley blog is not for the faint of heart. I’m not going to tell you that cooking is always easy or convenient or that there is some magical new way to prepare nutritious, well balanced meals for you and your family, that doesn’t take any time. In fact, if I can do anything with this blog, it will be to encourage you to slow down your meal process and make it an important part of your day. I’d rather see people eat 30 minutes later than eat something out of a box from the grocer’s freezer.

I’m the child of immigrant parents. My mother was always in the kitchen. I know it’s not practical to think parents have the time to prepare elaborate meals every night of the week, but I simply cringe at the way families have learned to rely on already prepared – frozen, boxed or bagged meals that can be popped into a microwave. These little conveniences are filled with chemicals used to preserve and increase shelf life, not with anything that promotes health. Prepackaged foods are designed to be convenient, quick, and shelf or freezer stable, not healthy for the consumer. The growing number of people suffering from obesity, the alarmingly increased rates of diabetes, cancer and other health concerns, support the need for all of us to get off our butts and do some real cooking.

Feeding your family is not always convenient. However, if you truly want to do what is best for your family, you really need to prepare dinner from scratch – spending 30 to 60 minutes in the kitchen, using the freshest ingredients. What really needs to change is our mind set. We don’t spend enough time in the kitchen cooking anymore. It’s healthier to cook with all natural ingredients that haven’t been adulterated. It’s worth spending a little more money to buy the better cut of meat and the fresh vegetables. It doesn’t have to be complicated to be healthy, fresh, and prepared from scratch.

Preparing meals for your family does not have to be extremely time-consuming. In fact, there are many recipes you can throw together in a crock pot, before you leave for work and come home to a hot, nutritious dinner, without much effort at all. The reason I started Pélago Valley was to provide all natural seasonings for proteins that would encourage people to get into the kitchen and experiment with getting their hands a little dirty: chopping onions, preparing meat, washing and preparing vegetables.

Cooking from scratch adds one extra ingredient to every meal: love. There is probably no other meal more lovingly prepared than Thanksgiving dinner. That’s why Pélago Valley will not only be talking about Thanksgiving dinner next month, but also why we’ve developed a couple very special turkey seasoning products that allow you to choose a natural or organically raised turkey (instead of one injected with saline) and with very little effort, create a delicious and flavorful meat that can be prepared the way you choose, whether you roast, grill, or deep fry your turkey.

So if you believe in wholesome food, then you must believe in cooking; for it is impossible to know that your food is truly wholesome unless you prepared it yourself. May the desire to spend time in your kitchen overcome you and may you prepare wonderful meals to share with your family and friends.
